The renowned animation studio Pixar is no stranger to covering grown-up themes in its full-length movies, focusing on every thing from mortality and coming-of-age to the environment and rampant consumerism. In November, the studio broke new ground with “Float,” a six-minute short film (released through Disney+) metaphorically exploring autism from the perspective of a parent.
On January 10, Pixar will release “Loop,” a second short that also focuses on autism, promoting a positive message of understanding and acceptance. In a press release, Pixar explained that the plot of the film follows “a non-verbal, autistic girl and a chatty boy [who] are partnered on a canoeing trip. To complete their journey across an urban lake, they must both learn how the other experiences the world.”
The short was directed by Erica Milson, a Pixar filmmaker who has garnered awards for her previous work, such as 2017’s “So Much Yellow,” which also focused on characters with special needs. The announcement of “Loop” has generated a positive response on social media, particularly on Twitter, where many users expressed appreciation for the film’s representation of characters with autism.
